Introducing: Springer Nature

At the beginning of 2015 an exciting new publishing giant was announced, through the merging of Macmillan Science and Education and Springer Science+Business Media.

The new company – Spinger Nature – combines the publishing portfolios of these 2 companies, and creates a firm with some 13,000 employees and a turnover of around €1.5 billion! The Macmillan parent company, Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, will own the majority share at 53%.

The scientific publishing market is dominated by the so-called ‘big four’ companies: Springer (which reports hosting 2,987 journals), Elsevier (3,057), Wiley (2,339) and Taylor & Francis (2,105). Together, they comprise around 30% of the world’s total scholarly peer-reviewed journals, which number 34,585 (28,134 English language), according to Ulrichsweb, an online directory of scholarly journals. Macmillan Science and Education publish a mere 160 journals – however many of these contain the Nature branding. The Nature Publishing Group contains a huge number of journals encompassing all areas of Science and impact factors. (Nature being the top impact factor for multidisciplinary sciences 42.351)

Today Springer and Macmillan Science and Education (including Macmillan Education, Nature Publishing Group and Palgrave Macmillan) finalized our merger and joined together to form Springer Nature….We are confident that coming together will enable us to do more than we could as separate companies, particularly to meet the needs of you, our customers and partners…..We have much to learn from each other and we will now begin our work to create one unified organization. We already have much in common, and with an expanded portfolio, combined competencies and committed staff, we are excited to get started. By bringing together the best of both worlds, we can grow and innovate to better serve academic researchers, students, teachers, institutions, professionals and the wider public, and help them – and you – discover more.
